The Weekly Haul – Week of March 18, 2015

While not the largest week, this was certainly a largER week than I’d “prefer” these days for new comics.

I believe there are only two issues left of the Solar series to finish out…and only a couple more weeks on the DC Weeklies.

I “recognized” Secret Identities from enjoying the first issue last month, and with a handful of other #1s was itching to try something “new” for the sake of something “new.” I opted for Red One over Chrononauts (which was going to be my first choice) or even both.

There were a bunch of covers for Chrononauts…which, to me, means they have no need of me to support the title because frankly, they expect people out there to buy multiple copies, which will MORE THAN cover me purchasing #1. (Or by extension, #2 or #3 or #4….).

I flat-out did not buy to try the first issue of what was otherwise an interesting enough concept and title because I refuse to support some random title sporting so MANY VARIANT COVERS. I was going to buy it, until I noticed all the variants.

I’m also on the hunt for Warlord of Mars #0, and checked a couple comic shops for DC Comics Presents #31 and Nightwing (1990s) #30 with no luck, my interest in the latter two up thanks to listening to a podcast this morning; the WoM issue thanks to listening last week to an interview with writer Matt Brady.

I’ll likely resort to eBay or such this weekend on that one once I’ve checked a final shop.

A Return to Lego-ing

It’s been quite awhile since I’d bought or assembled any Lego sets. I’ve bought several “mini sets”–those ones in the plastic packets that tend to be in the novelty aisle for Easter baskets, Christmas stockings, Trick or treat goodies, etc or just in the checkout lanes.

But the urge finally hit strongly enough to actually do some assembly.

Firstly, this ice-bear mech. I’m absolutely a sucker for Lego mechs, and this one was quite fun to put together. Quick, simple, looks cool…I even bought a second one just for the heckuvit, to repeat the experience and have a second one with things. It’s small enough, and I don’t’ know the actual Legend of Chima story stuff enough to know if it makes sense story-wise. But I like it. I put this one together on part of a lunch-break at work, and am thinking I may shift more Lego-ing to work lunches.

This one hardly got a second thought, given it’s a mech and a medium set–not tiny, not huge and expensive.

I probably spent a bit over an hour assembling this one, not too long at all, but not terribly quick.

I much prefer the thing in this “mode,” with the “sword wings” folded down.

There’s a Batman mech in a $50 set that I’m not quite willing to spend that much on, though I’ve been eyeing the thing for a few weeks. I’ll probably get it eventually, but for now, the mech-building itch has been (temporarily) scratched for the first time in over a year.

Digging out classic posters

In my first apartment, I went all-out decorating with posters, and had them all over the place. I actually bought several poster magazines just to have MORE, along with an X-Men calendar just for the images (that work quite well AS posters).

In my current apartment I’ve been a lot more reserved, aiming more toward having any posters that I hang be framed ones.

As I’ve been unable to find exactly-matching frames for some, I did finally find several that fit these, with an acceptably-sized “border” left over.

The TMNT poster is from Wizard back in 2003 or so when the short-lived Dreamwave series based on the 2003 cartoon was being published.

The Prime vs. the Ultraverse poster is from a 1993 issue of Hero Illustrated, I believe. And the X-Men poster I believe is from 1993 or so, though I don’t remember where it’s from–it may have been a pull-out from a Wizard magazine, or else a comic shop promo.

New Toys on New Comic Day

Despite it being a New Comic Day, I’m more excited with a couple of toy purchases this week.

Valiant‘s weekly email noted that the announced-awhile-back-and-I’d-forgotten MiniMates pack of X-O Manowar and Bloodshot was now in Toys R Us stores…so I stopped by my local TRU and found it. And bought it.

While in TRU I also browsed the Lego stuff, and happened to notice a new Mech:

Since they’re often cheaper at and I was going to Target anyway, I ended up getting the Mech there, though it proved to be the same price as TRU.

I suppose I might be “back” into Legos again for a time. We’ll see, though…

Funko TMNT Blind Box Minis

I’m still missing Bebop, Splinter, and Casey Jones from this line of the Funko minis…I’m not really interested in buying more of the boxes blindly due to the odds of “just” getting a duplicate (the only one I wouldn’t mind getting duplicates of would be the Foot Soldier).

I really like the four turtles…especially as these are so much more expressive than the full-size Pop line.

I didn’t like the Foot Soldier at first…but when I wound up with a second one and realized how great they look flanking Shredder, I decided I do like ’em. And I far prefer this Shredder to the classic action figure!

While I’d love the Krang having an actual piece as Krang himself (that’s just a sticker on the gut), I do like the size/bulk of the figure. Rocksteady looks smaller here than he actually is, and is a good size himself…all of these are.

For the most part, I’ve had little interest in any full “wave” of Funko figures…but this TMNT one is a definite exception as yet again, the TMNT prove a weakness for me.

Hooked on the Air Bender

I tend to be a hard sell on most things. I don’t like change once I’m used to something, and I don’t tend to embrace new stuff when the old still works just as well. But once I do give something a shot, if I like it, I tend to go all-in rather quickly.

A couple years ago after a weekend visit with friends where we watched several “key” Dalek episodes of the current Doctor Who run, I went back and re-watched the Eccleston premiere series and then finally forged into Tennant‘s first series and far enough in to actually get hooked, and sped through the entire run before summer. A A year or so prior to that, my friends had had me watch a couple episodes, and I did watch the Eccleston series, but couldn’t get into Tennant‘s, so just let it go by the wayside.

In a similar fashion, last year the same friends had me watch a couple episodes of The Legend of Korra; and I do recall watching the final five-ish episodes of Avatar a number of years earlier. Then the weekend of the 14th they had me watch the first few episodes of Avatar…and this time it “took.”

It also helps that a couple other friends have also been “into” these and so had also had my interest up.

I don’t like Amazon Prime, and had seen the Avatar box sets at Target and already’d considered picking them up, so I did, and finished Book 1 and all of Book 2 in less than 9 days including that weekend visit with my friends.

And I’m hooked. I have every intention of getting the Complete Book 3 Collection, and then moving on to Legend of Korra…as well as likely checking out some of the comics.

The Weekly Haul – Week of February 18th, 2015

Another large-ish week for me…

Three Valiants, and a mix of other non-Marvel/non-DC stuff.

Not particularly enthused by anything this week, though I did decide to give Secret Identities a try for something outside my “usual” for now, though even if I like it I’ll almost certainly hold out for a collected volume.

Second week leaving the DC Weeklies on the rack…going to end up being a rather expensive catch-up, though will have to make certain I have my numbers correct to avoid duplicates.

The Mighty Mutanimals Promo Ads from 1991

Twenty-four years ago, after a number of characters were introduced in the pages of the Mirage-created/Archie-published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, a group of mutant animal characters were put together as a group…

We had several ads leading up to the group, as the group was to be given its own mini-series, a spin-off from the main TMNT Adventures title…

The series was the “payoff” of a bunch of “mutant of the month” stories as well as following up on a plot element from earlier in the series…

Krang had made a deal with Maligna, an alien bug queen from his own Dimension X to give her the Earth. When he was defeated, she still wanted the planet, and it fell to a group of mutant animals to stop the invasion.

While I know there is a new Mutanimals mini-series about to start from IDW, it has more than two decades of expectation to live up to. While I’ve been used to the turtles themselves being reinterpreted numerous ways, for the most part there’s only been one single incarnation of the Mutanimals, so the new stuff (for me) will be heavily compared to the “classic” stuff.

The Weekly Haul – Week of February 11th, 2015

Another large week with clustering: THREE Valiants. Again…

As well as the first issue of Darth Vader, and the final issue of the entire Fire and Stone “crossover” mega-story with the Prometheus, Aliens, AVP, and Predator properties.

I actually passed on the DC Weeklies for now in favor of this image firsts compendium. It’s a fairly hefty paperback with NINE #1 issues (that’d be at least $27 cover price offhand) for a mere $5.99. For only $1 more than the Darth Vader issue, I have 9 #1s to sample in a single paperback.

I’ll probably catch up on the weeklies next week…nearing the end so just finishing those out and hope that when I finally catch up on the reading it proves worthwhile.

The Weekly Haul – Week of February 4th, 2015

This seemed like the smallest week in quite awhile. “only” the three DC weeklies, two Valiants, and Star Wars from Marvel.

And I don’t quite get why we have two issues of X-O Manowar in a row…that’s even more clustering than the usual for Valiant.

Next week is gonna be huge, and with DC‘s news today about the changes to the line in general, I’m rather discouraged toward continuing with any of their output.
