Spawn…from Kickstarter!

So…last year, Todd McFarlane ran a Kickstarter project to do an updated version of the original Spawn figure from the 1990s.

It sounded cool, and I jumped in on it.

And then I waited…

And waited.

And operating on the understanding that it would arrive when it arrives, I was good with stuff.

spawn_kickstarter_box1

Last week, my figure finally arrived. And I’d actually forgotten about there being something in the campaign itself about collector-friendly packaging. This is quite the complex, specialized/"white-glove" packaging, though…VERY high-end for the price of this thing!

spawn_kickstarter_box2

In fact, this reminds me of an Apple product…where the packaging is a big part of the thing itself.

Take the slipcover off, and you have the box. And there’s a pretty ribbon to allow you to open the box without damaging it…

spawn_kickstarter_certificates

Then there’s a sheet with a checklist comparing this new 2020 edition of the figure with the original edition from 1994…and a certificate of authenticity.

spawn_kickstarter_figure_in_box

Remove those and a foam sheet and you reveal the figure itself, nicely packed within its foam enclosure!

spawn_kickstarter_kickstarter_bonus_accessories

There are some extra accessories in the foam tray..I believe these are "stretch goal" pieces due to the campaign raising about 30 times what McFarlane had aimed for.

spawn_kickstarter_packaging

And here, finally, is the actual figure, as it would typically appear if it were a store-bought item, with none of the fancy boxing, packing, and so on…just closed into plastic and all that.

spawn_kickstarter_comic_front

As with the original figure(s), this comes with a comic, albeit with a new cover, I believe. It reprints Spawn #1…but as a director’s cut. Definitely a cool artifact in and of itself!

spawn_kickstarter_comic_back

The back of the comic shows off the original back cover of the comic that had come with that first figure. However, I noticed a typo…"This is the original add." Sigh. That should be "ad," one "d" as it’s not something that was ADDed to something. It was an ADvertisement.

Whatever. One word, BACK cover, the level of detail and prettiness to the appearance…the words aren’t exactly the important thing here..right?

It’s the…shall we say…IMAGE that counts?

spawn_kickstarter_comic_compared

Here’s the new comic side-by-side with an original–the Medieval Spawn, though. Just to show the trade-dress and such.

spawn_kickstarter_out_of_package

And here’s the figure out of all the plastic and on its display base…on the fancy box.

spawn_kickstarter_up_close

And a closer-up pic of the figure itself without the extra.

I reallllllly like this. Much better coloring and detail, and actual metal for the chains…I’m quite happy with this, especially for the price!

It was well worthwhile, and I’m verrrrrrrry glad I did not pass on this!

spawn_kickstarter_with_original

And then for good measure, here’s the new figure side-by-side with the original!

(Well, the body is my original…while the chains and cape, I believe, were from a loose copy I bought several years back).

I lack a pre-set display location for this…but it’s one that defffffinitely needs to be displayed.

And thanks to all that fancy packaging…this COULD be re-packaged either for storage or sale.

However, unless I explicitly have some other post saying otherwise…this guy’s "NFS/NFT!"

Too Many Unopened Figures?

My purchasing of various figures has vastly outstripped my opening of said figures.

For that matter, it’s outgrown my available display space.

too_many_figures02

I’d gotten the Age of Apocalypse wave of Marvel Legends last year, and 6/7 in the House of X wave this year (still looking for that 7th). I’ve also snagged some others "randomly" over the last couple years; plus the Rogue and Gambit retro-style figures. I suppose more than "random" the better word is "isolated." Citizen V, Thunderstrike, Doom and Thing, Genis-Vell and Mar-Vell.

too_many_figures01

Three of my favorite Mortal Kombat characters; these based on MK11 from a couple years back–Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. SPAWN got a figure for the line (and a role in the game as DLC). For as much Batman-Fatigue as I have, other than The Flash and an Action Comics #1000 Superman figure, all of my DC Multiverse figures from McFarlane Toys have been Batman related. 3 Batman, 2 Azrael, and Nightwing. (And I’ll likely get Robin if I come across it for "retail price"). Annnnd a Warhammer 40k figure that just…simply…looked cool.

And I showed off the Lightning Collection Mighty Morphin figures a few weeks back.

I finally realized recently that I had stacks of figures…and decided to stick ’em on shelves so I can at least see what I’ve got. No plans of getting rid of any anytime soon…but another factor in getting so many in short order is the toy landscape these days where you can see stuff ONCE and never, ever again "on the shelves" and have to go to the secondary market if you don’t "snap it up" the first time you see something.

That’s a topic for another post sometime.

To answer the question posed as the subject of this post:

Too many unopened figures?

From a certain perspective, sure. On the other hand, as I joked to someone recently…I don’t have ALL OF THE TOYS, so…?

Weekend Retail Therapy: Sonic the Hedgehog Figures

Over the weekend, while still unable to locate the Marvel Legends House of X Jean Grey, or any NECA TMNT, or any Retro GI Joe, or any Masters of the Universe Origins (other than He-Man and Skeletor)…I did find a complete wave of the McFarlane Toys Batman: Curse of the White Knight with the build-a-figure Bane…I had those in my cart, gritting my teeth at the $80 expense…but checking the price of something else, happened to scan one of those and balked at the $24.99 price…$5 more than the $19.99 I was planning. Considering BANE is the figure I especially wanted, I wasn’t gonna pay that extra $20, so I went back to put those back.

And noticed the Sonic the Hedgehog figures.

sonic_the_hedgehog_4inch_sonic_tails_knuckles

While thinking about ’em, I was telling myself if they had these three–all three of them–I’d get ’em; but I wasn’t going to get "just two."

I flipped through the figures on the pegs…they had Sonic. AND Tails. AND Knuckles!

So (and as you already surmised from the photo above and reading this post at all) I bought ’em.

sonic_the_hedgehog_4inch_sonic_back

From the back of the packaging…I’m sure I’ve seen Super Shadow before, but I’m really not "familiar with" the character. The heyday of the property for me is the first 2 Sonic games, with a bit of the third. I had the first two, but only ever rented the third.

sonic_the_hedgehog_4inch_sonic_back_text

Multi-lingual box-back. Basically same back for all three figures, but the text is specific to each character.

So a bit of the cross sell but I still think they should do "profile cards" like they did for a lot of ’80s and early-’90s figures. What can I say? I’m a sucker for that sorta thing!

Anyway…nothing overtly special about these, except partly hitting nostalgia (I believe Sonic is 30 this year?) and partly consolation prize not finding anything else I was really actually looking for.

Weekend Retail Therapy: Marvel Legends Deluxe Infinity Gauntlet Thanos

Over the weekend, I had hopes of tracking down a Jean Grey from the Marvel Legends House of X wave.

Buuuut my heart really was NOT in "the hunt" or anything–across two days I think I visited two Walmarts, a Target, and a Meijer.

I did get a pleasant surprise at the Target, though in coming across a figure I had completely forgotten was going to be coming out: another Thanos.

marvel_legends_deluxe_thanos_infinity_gauntlet_front

This is one of those "deluxe" releases–larger packaging AND larger price than a "regular" figure (and no hook for pegs–deluxe/special enough to be put on a shelf, not merely hung on a peg like some common figure) <– (note sarcastic tone there).

marvel_legends_deluxe_thanos_infinity_gauntlet_top

It was honestly the top of the box that REALLY caught my attention, first, in passing. Since I was looking higher–the pegs–it was that familiar multicolored glinting effect of the Infinity GEMS (yes, gems!) that stood out and then drew my view on to the figure itself.

marvel_legends_deluxe_thanos_infinity_gauntlet_side

Some great "key art" (I think that’s the term? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, maybe I’m not using it correctly) on the sides of the package.

marvel_legends_deluxe_thanos_infinity_gauntlet_back

And the back seems "typical" Thanos to me, with Death there kinda by his side, yet hanging back…influencing yet not deferential yet not equal.

marvel_legends_deluxe_thanos_infinity_gauntlet_back_text

And a closeup of the text from the back of the box there.

Not really much to say on this one except that it surrrrrrrre is pretty! I’m a real sucker for Thanos stuff–the character makes up an entire subcollection for me…on par with Superman and Robin as far as singular, specific characters go.

This thing’s a $30 figure…which is "only" $10 more than the standard $20ish for the Marvel Legends via Walmarts and Targets.

I’m pretty sure this is a re-release of the Walmart-exclusive one from 2-3 years back (albeit with an additional head?). Not sure if it’s really worth that $30 price tag, having previously been released AS a $20 figure in regular-size packaging; this one’s akin to The Thing or a Hulk, and with the number of significantly smaller figures that have the same price as beefier counterparts…it seems a little shameless on principle for this to be a $30 release.

THAT said…I’d rather pay $30 to get this "at retail" than as a marked-up price of a $20 figure second-hand.

And given my collection of Thanos…I wasn’t about to pass this one up!

Lanard Predator Collection (Hunter Series) 2021

THIS YEAR, in addition to their Alien Collection, Lanard also has a line of Predator figures!

We have the 7" Jungle Hunter Predator:

lanard_predators_7inch_jungle_hunter_front

front of the packaging…

lanard_predators_7inch_jungle_hunter_back

Back of the packaging.

lanard_predators_7inch_city_hunter_front

Then there’s the City Hunter Predator.

lanard_predators_7inch_city_hunter_back

…and the back of its packaging.

lanard_predators_7inch_berserker_front

The Berserker Predator front…

lanard_predators_7inch_berserker_back

And the back.

I’m hardly as well-versed in Predator lore as Alien…so I’m far less discerning on differences in details.

To me, these are simply cool figures and obviously Predators in various gear and all that. For the $10/ea price….that’s fantastic and I’m maybe even MORE of an ideal target audience for these as such than for the Alien figures.

In addition to these 7" figures…

lanard_predators_12inch_jungle

There’s a 12" deluxe figure of the Jungle Hunter Predator. This is essentially the Predator counterpart to the Alien Queen.

lanard_predators_12inch_jungle_back

As a 12" figure I think this will fit in well with a number of other 12" figures, as well as be quite the individual piece on shelves of smaller Alien/Predator figures.

I don’t feel that this one’s all that necessary in the way the Queen is for the Alien line…but for $20 it’s a remarkable figure and seems well worth its asking price to me, while exceeding any personal desire for NECA versions.

lanard_predator_collection_hunter_series

As said, I’m less familiar with the Predator characters and figures, and so I’m going to be just as happy with what MAY amount to "less" where I don’t even know what I’m "missing" with a "kids’ toy" vs. some hyper-detailed screen-accurate version that’s still 10% more expensive than this 12" beast of a figure.

While I do plan to get some duplicates of the Alien figures to customize, I don’t know that that’s necessary for me for these.

I also find it interesting that these carry more of the "familiar" Predator branding than the Alien line.

Whatever…for such great figures at an amazing price-point, I’m sure as heck NOT complaining!

NECA Aliens: Alien Queen Deluxe

This shows just how far behind I’ve gotten in producing content for this blog! I got this about FIVE WEEKS ago! But only just now getting around to sharing/posting about it!

I’d seen this several years ago in a Toys R Us, but at the time it was wayyy outta my price range. Of course, I spent much of 2018 contemplating stuff in the price range, and finally pulled the trigger on the most expensive toys I’ve ever bought: the NECA Baby Turtles, a (non-NECA) Power Rangers Legacy Megazord, the NECA 1/4-scale Raphael, the Gamestop-exclusive 7" 1990 movie turtles, the 1/4-scale Leonardo & Michelangelo, the 1/4-scale Donatello, and the ’80s 2-packs.

And so it just made sense to (finally) get this Alien Queen, as well!

neca_aliens_alienqueen_front

Like the other figures, this one has a window on the front for you to see (part of) the figure itself, and a nice dioramic image on the rest of the box.

neca_aliens_alienqueen_sides

One side of the box is another window to see in to the Queen, while the other side shows the typical photo/rendition of the figure…in this case, with another figure for some scale, though that figure is not actually something included in this box (and that fact is noted: "Marine Figure Sold Separately").

neca_aliens_alienqueen_back

The back of the box is the Queen herself and a brief overview of what she is.

neca_aliens_alienqueen_standing_short

The figure is very "top-heavy," and in many poses–especially at her most "natural" and menacing, she won’t stand on her own…so a base with two rods is included to allow for various poses and balancing. The TMNT Donatello figure is a standard Ninja Turtle figure for size comparison…it was what I had handy when I was taking these photos back in March!

neca_aliens_alienqueen_standing_tall

I like the Queen raised up a bit more to show her height. She TOWERS over the other figures…as she should! While the 1/4-scale TMNT figures are amazing…they’re really only "in scale" with themselves (and the baby turtles). This Alien Queen is in scale with other NECA Aliens products, so they can all stand together and look awesome in the same scale!

neca_aliens_alienqueen_aliens_shelf

neca_aliens_alienqueen_aliens_books

And here’s–as of this writing–my Aliens shelving. The Queen and other figures are on top of a bookcase, with the books on the shelves immediately below.

neca_aliens_alienqueen_aliens_graphic_novels

The Aliens/Predator comics stuff doesn’t fit the newer shelving the figures are part of, so the comics and such are still in the midst of the graphic novels collection area…which is definitely plenty appropriate!

NECA TMNT ’80s Cartoon Two-Packs

Life’s been its own brand of crazy the last couple months. So I’m only now–a MONTH after the fact–getting around to sharing these cool purchases!

I’ve been AWARE OF the NECA brand since 2010 or 2011…whenever they did the Mirage Comics-style turtles, before the 2012 line for the Nickelodeon 2012 show was out from Playmates.

Having recently (finally) bought the Raphael and then Leo & Mikey 1/4-scale figures, these 2-packs from Target were not a terrible stretch…though it was a LOT to spend in such a short time-frame. But they served as a sort of "retail therapy" or such.

neca_target2packs

I’m not the greatest fan of the 1980s cartoon. For a time, I actually held a fair bit "against" it, though as the IDW comics have continued and have incorporated elements, stuff has been somewhat "redeemed" and I’ve come to appreciate its place in history–in general and of the TMNT property in general. And these 2-packs made for a decent "set" of figures…that’s certainly one thing about the TMNT stuff–it’s totally geared for sets of 4 with the main characters!

neca_target2packs_leoandshredder_front

Leonardo and Shredder make for a good pairing here. All the 2-packs are one turtle and one villain. So of course, matching the "leaders" up works quite well on a number of levels!

neca_target2packs_leoandshredder_back

While the front of the boxes are showing off the figures themselves, the backs show a staged photo, a short description, as well as the other 3 boxes available for this "wave" of figures!

neca_target2packs_donnieandkrang_front

Donatello and Krang are the "brains" of their respective groups…Krang pretty literally so. That makes these a good matchup as well. The walker contraption Krang rides in–from the earliest episodes of the ’80s cartoon–is roughly the same height as the classic Playmates figure…though Krang himself is a lot smaller here and more proportionate.

neca_target2packs_donnieandkrang_back

Back of the box showing Donnie poised to tip Krang right on over…

neca_target2packs_raphandfootsoldier_front

Though Raphael has come to be my favorite turtle as an adult, his 2-pack has him and "just" a Foot ninja. I’ve never been overly keen on this version of the Foot–mindless robots just seem like they shouldn’t be a threat whatsoever. And generally they were not MUCH of one, just a delaying tactic. Still, the poseability on the NECA figure(s) makes this far, FAR superior to the classic Playmates iteration!

neca_target2packs_raphandfootsoldier_back

Cliché as it is, there IS the classic line from Raph’s first encounter with the Foot bots. "Klang?!? Did you say–‘Klang’?"

neca_target2packs_mikeyandfootsoldier_front

Michelangelo also comes with a Foot bot, that seems basically the same as the one with Raph. Though it would seem a someone generic thing to have half the packs come with these…it also actually, truly makes sense as the Foot bots ARE generic and to just have one is to defeat the point of having generic minions. And as these are a much better quality, I’m glad TO have two, although I’d have also been rather happy if these came in their own 2-pack, so that their slots could be filled with other characters!

Of course, I believe I saw stuff coming out of the one toy convention that NECA has upcoming plans for Bebop and Rocksteady. And if they come in 2-packs like these…I’d be grateful to get the pair as their own pack. But if there’s to be more hero vs villain foolery to further induce buying of multiple packs…I’d take April and Splinter with them, and/or Casey Jones!

neca_target2packs_mikeyandfootsoldier_back

Here we have the back of the pack with Mikey gut-kicking his Foot bot.

neca_target2packs_sides_turtles

I like the sides of the packages. One side shows each of the turtles…

neca_target2packs_sides_villains

…while the other side shows the villain that turtle’s paired with!

The packs are definitely quite attractive as-is. But these being TMNT, I "couldn’t" just leave them in their boxes. So I did get them out. However, the photos of the unboxed figures will have to wait for another post!

TMNT Toys in the Wild: Rise of the TMNT 1st Wave

I already posted about the Raphael figure I bought over the weekend, with the new Rise of the TMNT toy line starting to make its appearance.

I came across a display of the entire first wave of basic figures, and got photos of them "in the wild" (actually at a Walmart). Including the not-in-the-wild Raphael, here are my photos of the figures "on the card" as well as their "profile" from the back of the card, a la the old "clip-and-collect" profiles from the ’80s line.

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_barondraxum_profile

Origami Ninja:

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_origamininja_front

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_origamininja_profile

Until seeing the figures for myself, I hadn’t realized the Origami Ninja had a foot slapped on its face…which does somewhat "qualify" it as a Foot Ninja…so against prior expectations, I may (eventually, perhaps) try to get several.

And Baron Draxum seems rather obviously a stand-in for Shredder, so there’s a good chance I may (again, eventually, perhaps) try to get one.

I’d figured Meat Sweats would be "worth it" for bulk alone…but I think I’ve pretty much decided that if I want a large pig muant…I’d rather go with a 30+ year old classic in Bebop.

Time will definitely tell. And I suppose I’ll be curious as to what other figures will make their ways out for this line.

I remember the 2012 line rolling out by early August 2012, and 3-4 more figures by Christmas. Given we’re at early October for these, I think I’d be sorta surprised to see a second wave in 2018, though not too surprised if another makes it out in early 2019.

I have issues with the extremely-limited nature and high prices on the Neca figures…and I think it would be absolutely fantastic if Playmates were to produce a line of figures based on the IDW comics…ideally in the style of Mateus Santolouco. The four turtles, Splinter, April, Casey, Shredder, Krang, (human) Baxter Stockman (with mousers), maybe a multipack of named Utrom characters; the Neutrinos, the Mutanimals…Bludgeon, Koya, Bebop, Rocksteady…Alopex, Agent Bishop, The Pantheon…

To borrow a phrasing style…I’d buy the heck outta those, at under-$10/figure!

But that wishlist and topic is surely a topic for some other post.

New Rise of the TMNT Figures are Out

For the first time in over six years…there’s a new "main" line of TMNT toys out.

BEING that it is the Ninja Turtles–my core "exception" on stuff in comics–that bleeds a bit into the toys.

I’m not a fan of Rise of the TMNT. I was NEVER the best at "keeping up" with the 2012 animated series–nor ANY animated series, PERIOD, in the last 15 years or so, no matter how much I love the series itself. But I’ve always HATED the "optics" of Rise–namely, that the 2012 series was flat-out cancelled TO MAKE WAY FOR this new series. Whether that was actually the case or not, I don’t know–but it’s certainly how I FEEL on the thing.

I watched the first episode some time back now, it was "free"–and while it wasn’t as "bad" as I’d expected (perhaps my view has softened since I watched it), I did not like it, and I really do not like a number of elements from it, particularly the character designs.

But somewhere along the way, I got it into my head that when the new toys came out, I’d probably "at least" try getting Raphael. "Traditionally" Leonardo was always my favorite of the turtles, and the one I’d claim as a kid and growing up. But over the last 10-15 years, I’ve found a newer preference for Raphael.

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_raph_front

So I did indeed go ahead and get Raphael, finding the figure available this weekend at a local-ish Walmart.

And on the surface, the figure itself doesn’t look totally horrid or such…this one, at least, actually more or less looks like a decent TMNT figure, albeit the character does not come with the sais that have been associated with this character for 34 years. But the "new/different weapons" thing is a whole other matter I’m not getting much into right now.

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_raph_back

The back of the figure is more or less what I would expect, if slightly more basic-looking. The bulk of the back is the "profile" of the character. It makes sense of course, for that to dominate…it just seems almost "too" dominant to me. With a new series, new toy line, I’d somewhat expect the part showing the figures available in this first wave to be a bit bigger, to better emphasize and show off THAT there are other figures!

Even so, I’m not enamored with most of these other figures as shown. Leonardo is dominated by the giant sword and seems scrawny; as does Donatello with a more proportionate staff weapon; and Michelangelo also seems rather scrawny for a Ninja Turtle.

I’ll be curious about Splinter as he looks rather small, but could be interesting.

This is the first "main" TMNT toy line that I’m aware of that has NOT included a Shredder in its premiere wave. On one hand, that’s a bit refreshing; on the other–and in context of these toys–I find it rather lame.

The butcher character might be interesting for size…it looks like a nice, bulky character that’ll at least be worth its price for that bulk; where the ninja doesn’t look like it’ll even stand on its own.

rise_of_the_tmnt_toys_raph_profile

As a TMNT guy, as a collector…not having a Shredder and not having any Foot ninjas does this line a real disservice. I’m not invested in any of the villains…and with neither Shredder nor Foot, there’s not even the notion of having a new version to "match up with" the previous versions.

I’m reluctant on the other turtles, but have NOT ruled out the idea with myself that I’ll get the other turtles and Splinter to at least have the "set."

I appreciate the idea of having new characters and NOT merely regurgitating the past. That said…I’m NOT invested in the new show. I’m not invested in the particular new characters. I may get the other three turtles and Splinter–at least eventually–but I don’t really see getting much into this iteration of the toy line.

I could wind up eating those words, though.

Time will tell.

Avengers Hot Wheels and Shelf Displays Update

This comes a couple weeks later than intended, but that’s just how things are!

At a Walmart, I’d come across another bin of Hot Wheels cars. Much as with several previous Marvel waves, I was able to find the entire numbered series, and given the small price point each (all 8 for less than the price of two Marvel comics), I went ahead and bought them.

avengers_hotwheels_infinity_war

These were numbered 1 through 7 of 7…and then the Infinity Gauntlet car was unnumbered. Of course, had I only bought one, I definitely would have gone with that. Only two, and I’d’ve gone with that and #4; three I’d have gone with that and #s 4 & 5.

As usual, these are kinda neat, spotlighting the Avengers through history. As I was primarily into them for Heroes Reborn and Heroes Return, #s 4 & 5 are my favorite here because of the cards!

And with this as a bit of a filler post–new content weekdays–here’s an update to the toy shelves/displays!

shelves_update_0515a

On top is the bulk of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers collection.

Then the TMNT (’80s/’90s) villains; then TMNT (’80s/’90s) "good guys" (non-turtles).

shelves_update_0515b

On the other side, the Power Rangers extend on over at the top, joining an AT-AT and Fin Fang Foom.

Below that’s the Superman shelf.

And finally, the newest shelf, with the Doomsdays and then mostly ’90s-ish miscellaneous figures.

I’d intended to do a similar display for my Marvel Legends, but they won’t fit, doing the three-tier, so I’m going to have to figure out something else!
