Is the Plural of ‘Galactus’ ‘Galacti’?

I recently learned of a new 10" Funko Pop 10" figure of Galactus. When I went to (pre?)order it, I discovered a new-ish Heroclix Galactus as well, and wound up ordering that. Had a bit of a mishap but eventually sorted stuff out and got it from Amazon.

I then finally ‘pulled the trigger’ and ordered the Labbit figure, spending more than I should for something so tiny but figured it was cheaper than 2 individual blind boxes, where I’d still only have a 2:20 chance of even getting Galactus.

And so the Galactus sub-collection stands updated. There’s another newer Mystery Mini that I’ve been unable to find to purchase individually online, and I am not about to drop $6/box on a bunch of blind boxes for characters I’m not even interested in. There’s also a large Galactus from the toy line for the 1990s Fantastic Four cartoon that I don’t have. And From pictures online, I think there may be another Heroclix Galactus that I’m missing.

But I’m quite happy with the collection I have…there’s a fair bit of memories wrapped up in these, as well as the relative coolness (to me) of having even this many in one place.

I have memories of visiting a Big Lots with a friend probably senior year of high school or my freshman year of college and getting the Galactus from the Silver Surfer animated series line. And there was the botched Origins Game Fair trip that helped lead to my first Gen Con trip to Indianapolis that also kicked off what’s been 16+ years of guys’ weekends with those friends.

I’m pretty sure the Marvel Legends Galactus was my first build-a-figure (with the Sentinel and Apocalypse waves following). And the (I believe) Toys R Us-exclusive electronic talking Galactus from the 3.75" Marvel line at the time remains one of my earliest most expensive toy purchases prior to 2019.

The Mighty Muggs figure is one of my favorites from that line and reminds me of the friend that introduced me to the figures. This is the same friend who bought one single Labbit box on a whim and pulled the Galactus one (As I recall, he only wanted Galactus or Deadpool).

The Mystery Mini is one of my best-luck "pulls," from buying a single blind box of some villains wave. And the regular-size Funko Pop Galactus involved a pre-order and then driving to a GameStop to buy in-person thus getting the figure a couple weeks earlier than projected from the order, where-ever that was through.

While I have far more Robins, Supermen, and Thanos…Thanoses…Thanosi…figures of Thanos…Galactus seems to be a sort of premium, epic sub collection on my shelves, and thus showing off this latest configuration of the display!

Rearranging Some of the Toys (Early March 2018)

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been working on re-doing my comic-space in the basement. New/additional bookcases, sectioning out the space, and to do all that has involved (temporarily) packing up a bunch of the non-book stuff that found a home on shelves over the previous 2 1/2 years or so.

Though I’m still "in-process" with it all, here are some photos of stuff that either didn’t get "packed away" or has found its way back out.

Some of my Heroclix oversized figures. "Plastic statues" for lack of other description. I think Galactus remains my favorite, though I like Spectre, the Sentinels, Dark Phoenix, and Sinestro with his yellow construct, as well! (If I didn’t, they wouldn’t be here on display!)

I have two different Mongul figures. The one on the left is from a line of DC/Superman toys some years back; the one on the right is (I believe) a DC Direct figure. I think this sculpt was re-used for a Sinestro Corps version…mine’s from the Infinite Crisis series, offhand.

The Galactus figures are from the 1990s SIlver Surfer line; Funko‘s Marvel Mystery Minis; and the old iteration of Mighty Muggs, respectively.

Kilowog is a DC Direct figure, one of my favorites! Hulk is a Marvel Legends figure. The Skrull Giant Man is from the Marvel 3.75" line–I believe he was a Walmart-exclusive giant figure. This Galactus is the Marvel Legends build-a-figure, when these were large and special and cost less than half of what Marvel Legends figures go for present-day.

I continue to add to the "Thanos collection," most recently adding the finally-taken-out-of-packaging-after-several-years Marvel 3.75" iteration and the Lego mini-figure that I got the other day.

I have a lot of other toys/figures/etc. that I’ll likely show off in the near-future as I continue the re-arranging project. I’ll also almost certainly show off the up-to-date graphic novel collection/library, and maybe even an overall "tour" of the basement space. Time shall definitely tell!

New Year, New Toys…

I’m a sucker for certain toys, and characters…and certainly for formats, among a number of other factors.

Coming across a display of Deadpool plushies in Target recently, I couldn’t pass them up. I already have the oversized Funko Pop plush for Deadpool, so just the “standard costume” wasn’t enough…I also snagged the Uncanny X-Force one as well.

These are a great size–small without being tiny, but large enough to plop where-ever and not lose them.

There were a couple other versions–the Blue and Gold from when he decided to join the X-Men, and what looked like an inversion of that costume as well (more gold than blue). I’m happy with these two, though I’ll be interested in what other merchandise will be out for the upcoming film, given general action figure issues with the whole Disney-Fox thing.

I managed to hunt down the Extreme Heroclix Superman. This has the New 52 design that I’ve accepted as being pretty much standard now and what’s being pushed. While I no longer care for the game, I liked the sculpt, and have long appreciated the oversized Heroclix things as they make nice “statues” at a cost far under that of actual statues.

While checking out the Batman v Superman stuff lately, I found these boxes of Mighty Minis–blind-pack miniatures. The ones I’ve seen are a mix of Batman v. Superman specific and Batman Unlimited (more comic booky than movie-based). I was going to pass on them until I spotted the Robin figure on a pack. It looks like the Batman Unlimited packs have Batman Beyond, Robin, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Flash, and Batman; and I don’t know if the package’s blacked-out silhouette image is to indicate un-advertised “chase” figures, or that when you buy the packet you don’t actually know which figure you’re buying.

I’d be interested yet in Batman Beyond and Flash, and wouldn’t mind Batman.

The Batman v Superman packs look to have Superman, a gold Superman, a black-suited Superman, Armored Batman, and green-gauntlet Batman. at this point I’d only want the regular Superman, so if I buy any more of these packs, I’ll probably go for the Batman Unlimited ones (though I primarily just wanted Robin, so I’m happy as-is).

The packs are $2.99, which is rather steep for any bulk purchasing. As a random quick addition to a cart of groceries, it’s not bad, and I like the figures. They’re not particularly articulated, but look good.

And Robin (Tim Drake) is one of my absolute favorite comic characters (the version that was around til 2011 anyway), so I’m all for Robin figures…

What’s the plural of ‘Galactus’?

Going through more toys, and realized that Galactus has obviously been one of my favorite characters.  A friend suggested there may have been a Mini-Mates version, and something else I’m forgetting offhand–I might just have to check on that.
As it is, I have these four representations of Galactus, pictured below:

More toys

Continued inspiration struck today, so I’ve decided to share some of the other toys that I have scattered around my apartment.

First up are my Mighty Muggs. You’ll find these in the toy aisle at most Targets and Walmarts, and probably at some comic shops. Here are my Star Wars Mighty Muggs:. Obi-Wan, Yoda, Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and 1 (of 2) Storm Trooper.

Next are my Marvel Mighty Muggs–Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man on the heroic side, Galactus on the villains’ side.  Sharing the hanging rack (from left to right) are Chip Harvey (named by a friend), a Burger King Yoda; a McDonald’s (I think!) Batman. Then Elvis-inspired M&Ms minis found at a drug store. Then Mike and Sulley (Sulley’s from McDonald’s, I’m not sure where Mike came from). On Galactus’ other side, a BGSU (my alma mater) falcon, and a plush Care Bear I snagged from one of those claw machines, that never got given away.

Some more Mighty Muggs, these from the Indiana Jones line. That guy who did the thing with the heart; a couple of Cairo Swordsmen, and of course, Indy himself.  Sharing shelftop space is an M&Ms dispenser, and the Marvel Legends Sentinel with X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3.75″ Comics Wolverine.

These are my oversized Heroclix figures. Spectre, Galactus, and Dark Phoenix were convention-exclusives in ’04-’06. Anti-Monitor came out last spring; the Sentinels and Sinestro-in-Ring-Construct came out back in ’02 or ’03.

Fin Fang Foom was the oversized Heroclix convention-exclusive in ’07. Here he’s holding a GCPD officer from the DC Infinite Heroes 3.75″ line…they’re presently filling space on my Marvel shelf.

Kilowog fills the space on another shelf between my zombie series and TMNT/GI Joe/Disney volumes. I forget which line he’s from–but it’s one of the DC Direct. I’d like to eventually add Hal, Kyle, and Guy…but we’ll see.

Here’s an Akira figure I picked up years back. This sits on one of my manga shelves (appropriately enough).

Mongul is from one of the older DC action figure lines from a few years ago. I think I had a Superman and Bizarro from the line–never did manage to snag the Cyborg Superman or Steel…still would sorta enjoy locating the ones from the Death/Return of Superman line from DC Direct, though. He sits on a high shelf with the background he came with, next to my Harry Potter paperbacks.

Thor here is the sole Marvel Legends figure I purchased after the line changed hands. As a fan of the Thor: Lord of Asgard period with the comics, this was far too cool to pass up on at the time! (I might eventually dig out my classic Thor, which was the first-ever Marvel Legends figure I’d picked up–and offhand the figure that started me back into occasionally collecting such toys back in my college days).

These guys chill on a computer that’s been waiting to get fixed up…if/when I do anything new with non-book shelving, they’ll probably have top billing there. Robin’s from the DC Direct Teen Titans line; Batman and Nightwing come from the DC Direct Batman: Hush line. I also have Commissioner Gordon and Alfred from this line, though haven’t had room to have them out yet. Nightwing was a birthday/Christmas present; I later tracked down these other two to complete the “set.”

This Superman was given to me by a friend years ago. When attached to the cord he came with (or fishing line) and properly hung from the ceiling, you flips a switch under the cape, give him a push, and he’ll zoom in circles around the area until the batteries die. Right now, he guards the freezer/fridge in the kitchen for lack of better place to have ‘im.

And though not comic related, Red here hangs out on the couch along with his (not pictured here) buddy Yellow. Though not to a serious degree, I’m also a fan of certain M&Ms stuff (if not so much the candy itself).

So, that’s a quick look at some of the toys around this apartment. I also have a bunch of Ninja Turtles, primarily from the 2k3 series; a small handful of 3.75″ DC figures, and a whole slew of Star Wars and Marvel Legends that don’t currently have any place to be displayed.
